Crafting a Winning Highlight Video: Key Strategies for Athletes Seeking College Recruitment
THE # 1 GOAL OF THE HIGHLIGHT VIDEO
Capturing a coach’s interest enough that they either contact the athlete or put them on their “watch list”.
In order to accomplish an effective video you must keep this goal in mind as well as a couple of other facts:
Coaches do not give offers based on a highlight video, the video is only to capture the interest of the coach.
Therefore, coaches are not going to spend a lot of time viewing a video.
Coaches do not care about music or effects, they care about content.
Most coaches will view highlights with no sound.
Best tips for making an effective video
The video should be 2-5 minutes in length.
The clips should encompass all talents an athlete has.
Do not have 25 3-Pointers with 1 Mid-range and 1 steal
Do have 5 3pt, 5 Mid-range, 5 steals, 5 assists
Ensure at the start of each clip it is clear who the coach should be watching.
The best is to use arrows or circles that point to the player. This is done at the start of each clip.
If arrows/circles cannot be used, make sure to include jersey number and jersey color at the beginning of the highlight video.
After deciding on the clips to use, place the best ones at the start.
There is a limited amount of time that coaches will watch the video. If the coach only watches 10 plays, you want to ensure that he/she views the 10 best plays.
Video mistakes to avoid
After viewing hundreds of highlight videos, the 2 most common mistakes made are:
Not clearly identifying the recruit in the clip
Placing best clips in the middle or last parts of the video and not at the beginning.
How do you get the video to coaches?
There are many formats you can use to save the video. It is critical no matter the format, that you store the video online (TorqueSports, Youtube, etc) and then share the link with coaches.
This has 2 very key results:
A link can easily be sent by email or text and can easily be posted on social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc).
The amount of views/visitors can be measured and tabulated.
Once this video is created, the #1 action should be to get the video in front of as many college coaches as possible. You can do this by posting free on Twitter and Facebook. You can also send your information along with your highlight video via email to coaches. This method is what my business revolves around.
